In the interest of clarity, we decided that the best approach for the exhibition guide maps would be to employ a schematic approach that used simple geometric shapes for ease of reading. This has also been carried across to the icons used on the map.
Once the basic form had been drawn out we began playing with the visual approach to develop the map into something fitting with rest of the EOYS items / art direction.
Basic:
Rounded room corners:
Cut room corners:
This approach makes the map look too much like its made up of computer file icons. It also looks far too futuristic - it would look better as part of a Build or Designer Republic project. Not really in keeping with the rest of the art direction.
Colour coordinated rooms / courses:
This helps to add colour to our map as well as aiding navigation. The use of 80% black for the rooms also adds to this clarity creating a better distinction between corridor and exhibition space.
Our intention for the exhibition guide is to have the map reversed out of the grey background of the portraits to link them together more seamlessly:Operates better with two colours:
Getting better but Liam and I couldn't help feel that the bold shapes were perhaps a little too clunky for our End of Year Show promo visual approach. Outlining the room strokes as a sense of detail and helps to lose weight from the map - much more in keeping with our visual approach.
Happy that this map is the best map design to move on from we set about developing the colour coding and colours.
