Design Strategy Workshop - 12/01/11

Today we had a lovely, mind bending workshop to get our heads around the task ahead of us. Good of Fred to organise the session for the class. It really helped to clarify a few things in preparation for writing and submitting our FMP statement of intent in a couple of weeks.

Our task over Christmas was to fill in the below form. The first thing to do was to write down our reviewed position statement of our design practice. Mine has become much shorter and concise since last module - Print driven graphic design & art direction. Simple.
As with the past few years the main crux of my practice is print in all of its facets. Filling out the sheet it became apparent that in addition to gaining even more knowledge about print process / production I want to focus in on key themes relating to it during my FMP. Packaging, promotion, print specification, crafting / finishing, audience interaction and distribution are areas of interest under the umbrella of print process / production.
In addition to becoming a master of these I would also like to use typography (traditional & custom), image making and layout to add clarity through exploration of their relationship with each other. In turn, this should build on the way I look at hierarchy, designing with rules and developing 'brand' guidelines for application across a project's range / distribution.
Applying rules or said guidelines within a project will help me develop skills as an art director - looking at a project as a whole and ensuring that there is continuity an harmony between the elements. Particularly relevant with product ranges and ad campaigns for example.
Examples of key themes I have initially identified for FMP briefs include - Music (promotion, package, branding / identity), Colour (theory, clever use of, limited, considered application), Brand Equity (how it can be added through design & art direction), Packaging / Presentation (audience interaction, form and function, context) plus many more. These themes will need defining more but it is good to see I have plenty to work from.
Initial Statement of intent notes / proposal:
Initial chosen FMP themes/subjects & design principles:
(as you can see, on the design principles side of things its print skill heavy)
Having gone through the motions today we will need to have a first draft of our FMP Statement of Intent for next Wednesday's workshop. Important to try and get it as complete and coherent as possible so I can improve it further through feedback.
