UK Firsts Research

All well and good looking at lots of lovely stamp design but what I really need is some decent content for my series of stamps, so I decided to do some initial research into scientific discoveries, inventions and medical breakthroughs:
There are some interesting ones but what I am finding is that there is a distinct disparity between the firsts.
Some of my favourites form the above notes are:

Inventions:
Cats Eyes - Percy Shaw
Corkscrews - H.S. Heeley
Television - John Logie Baird
Light Bulbs - Humprey Davey
Wind Up Radio - Trevor Bayliss
The Mini (Car) - British Motor Corporation
Adjustable Spanner - Edwin Beard Budding (brilliant name!)

Medical:
Penicillin - Alexander Fleming
Periodic Table - John Newlands (Mendelev later improved on Newlands original)
Colour Blind Diagnosis - John Dalton

Scientific:
Theory of Evolution - Charles Dawin
Diagnostic Ultrasound - J. W. Wild
Splitting the Atom - Ernest Walton and John Cockroft

Misc.:
Crossword Puzzles - Arthur Wynne
Marshall Amplifiers (first to use large high-gain valves = loud) - Jim Marshall

More digging to be done to break down into distinct series', but plenty to work with for now (in between the pesky dissertation!)
