End of Year Show: Vector Map Development

Wanting to simplify our way-finding and exhibition map in response to our crit feedback Liam and I have ditched the colour coded course idea and decided to simplify it by colour coding each floor of the building.

Now only needing three colours instead of sixteen we set about choosing them. Our first port of call was the colours of the LCA mosaic colour that Chloe provided us with:

Having tested the mosaic colours we conceded that they were pretty rubbish for way-finding - far too dull and unobvious. Based on the mosaic colours we attempted to make them brighter for clear way-finding. A vast improvement but they needed fine tuning further.
Colour mix evolution:
Our shortlist of floor colours. Both happy with the blue and yellow - Liam and I ended up choosing the magenta mix (second from left) to complete the set.
Colours chosen, we began to explore how they could be applied to our maps in a simplified way. Starting with the old map we added the color to the room markers but we felt this was now too subtle and not obvious enough that it was the ground floor colour.
Then we went for the polar opposite - all yellow! This certainly gets across the point that the yellow is the floor colour but it lacks any refinement or detail.
Removing the right angle triangle room markers helps to remove weight from the map but the yellow is still too overbearing on the design.
Making the corridors white helps to ease the yellow into a more subtle position but perhaps its too subtle for the floor colour now.
Inverting the yellow and white on the above map proved to be the winning combination. Having the corridor in the floor colour reinforces the colour coding and the white of the rooms adds a considered detail that helps to remove the yellow weight from the map and adds clarity.
