EOYS - Interior Signage Mapping

Getting our heads around the interior signage and way finding was always going to be a difficult part of this brief. Knowing this Liam and I had another attempt at planning the signage more comprehensively than our earlier plans. 

Having simplified the colour coding we felt it important to make sure that the rest of the signage found at Blenheim Walk is idiot proof. No small task I can tell you!

We began by printing out the floor maps and walked around the uni noting exactly where signs needed to go (wall or overhead) and numbered them on a map for reference and noted down exactly the information that needs to be on each sign (see the below spreadsheets for corresponding information).

Whilst on the walkabout we also noted down exactly what course name doors should go where. This helped us to figure out exactly how many of each we would need to produce.

Whilst on our walkabout we thought it a good idea to measure the existing signage to give ourselves parameters as to how deep to make our own signs. This depth is in part due to the amount of information on the sign and in part due to its corridors ceiling height.

Overhead / Corridor Sign Measurements:

Armed with these measurements and eager to standardise the corridor signs we noted down applicable sizes for different parts of the institution to help us give each sign a specific size. Although now standardised, where possible we have designed a few one-off signs at the right size to cover existing hanging signs, namely the large overhead in the entrance corridor and the large hanging sign in the mosaic bar. Hanging signs that do not already exist have been given a standard size for ease of printing and placement. 

Full Building Signage Breakdown:

As you can see we have worked out many many way-finding signs for the building. Liam and I both had a very large headache after this 3 hour planning session. Worth it though. I think this is possibly the most comprehensive signage system the end of year show has ever seen. This level of planning, although a headache, should make the task far easier to organise and the production smoother. All we have to do now is figure out a clever way of laying out the signs as they will effectively be a one-off design for each. Right now I am just glad that we have finally got the information figured out. I don't think we'll be doing any more work on this today, need to rest my poor brain.
