Also this evening, in addition to developing a consistent system for the corridor signage layout, we designed the course name signs to be placed on the doors of each respective exhibition.
Our first port of call was to try using our original corner triangle to display the floor colour but because we had now dropped the course colour coding it seemed to not fit with the rest of the art direction (originally this approach referenced the course colour coding on the map).
Dropping this out of date approach we set about adding the colour coded floor colour in a more standardised way that is harmonious to the rest of the exhibitions design work. Using a simple line of colour across the top of the sign is an obvious starting point and an approach that introduces the floor colour very cleanly.
We tried increasing the weight of the stroke but feel the colour becomes too dominant in the sign.
Changing the placement of the thinner line to the bottom of the sign helps to ground it but looks a little strange.
Reducing its width works better, almost as if it were underlined. I like the subtlety of the floor colour in this approach. The area of grey around the colour gives it good contast.
