Having designed a sample sign to our baseline system we thought it a good idea to print it out a 100% to test the point size and legibility from a suitable distance.
Although the sign works well from a distance (and the fact most people will be reading if whilst standing underneath it) I felt that the point size could be increased slightly to help boost legibility / visibility even more. Nothing drastic, literally one ore two point sizes. Based on this we have devised a new baseline grid that works to 21pt type for the course classification & 42pt for the course name. The baseline is now set with increments of 7pt as the type point sized are multiples of 7.
This increase in size hes dictated that the less wide 'shallow' corridor signs will now be 660mm also to make sure that they accommodate the large point size. The benefit of this is that the batch of prints will now be standardised making them more recognisable to visitors when walking around the building.
